Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the most common and challenging conditions affecting older cats - an estimated 30% to 40% of cats 10 years of age or older may be affected. The successful management of cats with CKD is multifaceted and, while our treatment strategies are not curative, the goal is to do whatever we can to slow progression of the disease and to improve the cat's quality of life.

This webinar will focus on keys to improving the lives of cats living with chronic kidney disease and provide comprehensive insights into the diagnosis and holistic management of CKD in feline patients. We will begin with a review of the pathogenesis and staging of this disease and the important distinction between how CKD is diagnosed and staged. Discussion will cover dietary complications as well as practical tips for managing azotemia, acidosis, hypokalemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypertension, anemia, dehydration, and anorexia. We will also highlight the latest treatment breakthroughs including new therapies for anemia and strategies for managing non-diet related complications like intestinal dysbiosis. The role of FGF-23 in phosphorus homeostasis will be described as well as its clinical application in guiding dietary therapy.
