The Cost Of A Mitral Valve Repair Procedure

Cardiology

This is a portion of the transcript from Session III of the VetVine Mitral Valve Disease Masterclass Q&A segment:

Dr. Sheri Berger  l  VetVine:
So, I know there's probably a question on everyone's mind regarding these amazing mitral valve repair treatment options. I know it's on mine. Let's start with the lesser invasive options. Dr. Ahern, do you have a sense about what the cost of a V-clamp TEER procedure might run?

Dr. Michael Aherne: Yes. And, obviously, there's going to be some variability depending on the individual institution and location. But these procedures typically run from about $17,000 - $18,000 up to about $20,000 - $25,000 for the TEER techniques, and some of that's going to be dependent on the number of clamps that need to be deployed in a patient. But that's kind of a ballpark figure.

Dr. Sheri Berger  l  VetVine:
And what are we looking at for open-heart mitral valve repair? You know, the 8 hours in the OR, with all of those staffers involved in the procedure?

Dr. Katsuhiro Matsuura: Yes, at the University of Florida it runs about $45,000 to $50,000 US dollars. And that includes the anesthesia, the cardiopulmonary bypass, the surgery, and everything during the hospitalization. It does not include the post-operative recheck at 2 weeks, 1 month, 2 months, and 3 months. Rechecks are not included in that fee.

Dr. Sheri Berger  l  VetVine: Well, do you all have a sense about pet health insurance helping with reimbursement, for those - we hope - who have the pet health insurance?

Dr. Katsuhiro Matsuura: Yes, at the University of Florida we have seen Trupanion - a pet insurance company - they have supported claims and have covered some patients, so far.

Dr. Sheri Berger  l  VetVine: Wow, that's great. Can't overstate the importance of pet health insurance and getting it early in life - before you need it!
